Wall-Mounted vs. Recessed Electric Fireplaces: Which Fits Your Room?

ยท Cindaro Hearth

An electric fireplace can become the focal point of a room, but its installation style changes the finished look. A wall-mounted model sits on the wall surface, while a recessed installation places the fireplace body into a compatible wall opening. The right choice depends on your room, the model you choose, and how much work you want to take on.

Here's how to compare the two before buying or planning an enclosure.

Wall-mounted electric fireplaces: a surface-mounted focal point

A wall-mounted installation leaves the fireplace body projecting from the wall. It may suit a finished room where you want to avoid creating a recessed opening, provided the wall and mounting location meet the manufacturer's requirements.

Before choosing this approach, consider how far the unit will extend into the room, where its power cord will run, and whether the mounting surface can support the specified installation. Surface mounting still requires careful planning; it isn't a reason to skip the installation manual.

Recessed electric fireplaces: an integrated look

A recessed installation places the body into a prepared opening for a more built-in appearance. It may suit a renovation or a planned feature wall, but the opening, framing, ventilation, and power arrangement must match the particular fireplace.

Do not assume any electric fireplace can be recessed. Choose a model specifically intended for that installation and check whether it supports full or partial recessing. Have a qualified installer assess the proposed location before work starts.

Which should you choose?

Start with wall mounting if you prefer a surface-mounted look and want to explore an option without a recessed enclosure. Start with recessing if an integrated finish is your priority and you're prepared to plan the wall opening with an installer.

Neither style automatically means better heating. Compare the actual model's heat settings, controls, and manufacturer specifications rather than choosing on appearance alone. Installation costs also depend on the wall, electrical work, and finishing required, so get a quote for your room rather than relying on a generic estimate.

Measure the fireplace, not just the model name

A model's advertised size isn't necessarily its overall width or the required wall opening. Check the overall dimensions, body dimensions, mounting requirements, and specified opening separately.

For example, our 74-Inch Smart Electric Fireplace is sold as the 74-inch model, but its supplier-listed overall dimensions are 76.49 inches wide by 17.73 inches high by 6.3 inches deep. Its listed insert dimensions are 74.19 inches wide by 15.75 inches high by 5.85 inches deep. Neither measurement should be treated as a wall-opening instruction. Confirm the required opening against the manufacturer's installation manual before cutting or framing.

Check power, clearances, and nearby furniture

Before you settle on a location, check the manufacturer's electrical requirements, outlet access, mounting instructions, and clearances from furniture, curtains, and other materials. If you're planning a television or mantel above the unit, confirm that the proposed arrangement meets the instructions for both appliances. Don't rely on a room photo as an installation plan.

Our 74-inch model lists a 120V plug-in connection with a 6-foot cord. It also lists 750W and 1500W heat settings, app and remote controls, an adjustable thermostat, a timer, and a flame effect that can operate without heat. Review the installation requirements as well as these convenience features before deciding.

  • Can the proposed wall support the installation?
  • Does the location meet the manufacturer's ventilation and clearance requirements?
  • Is the required electrical connection available in the right location?
  • Have I included installation and finishing work in my budget?
