How to Choose an Electric Fireplace: Size, Installation & Power

· Joshua Lauterbach

An electric fireplace can bring a warm focal point to a living room, bedroom, or gathering space. Before choosing one, look beyond the flame display. The right fit depends on the fireplace’s actual dimensions, installation options, and electrical requirements.

Start with measurements, not the model name

A fireplace advertised as “74-inch” doesn’t necessarily measure exactly 74 inches across its outer frame. The model size, overall dimensions, and insert dimensions can be different.

For example, Cindaro Hearth’s 74-Inch Smart Electric Fireplace has supplier-listed overall dimensions of 76.49 inches wide, 17.73 inches high, and 6.3 inches deep. Its listed insert dimensions are 74.19 inches wide, 15.75 inches high, and 5.85 inches deep.

Those measurements help you compare the fireplace with your space, but they are not a substitute for the manufacturer’s required installation opening. Before cutting a wall or building an enclosure, confirm the opening dimensions and clearances in the installation manual.

Choose your installation approach

The 74-Inch Smart Electric Fireplace supports wall-mounted or recessed installation. Decide which approach you want before planning the surrounding wall, furniture, or cabinetry.

Check the manufacturer’s instructions for mounting requirements, suitable placement, ventilation, and clearances. If you’re unsure about the wall construction or electrical setup, consult a qualified installer before starting work.

Check power and heat settings

Our 74-inch model uses a 120V plug-in connection and includes a 6-foot power cord. It offers 750W and 1500W heat settings.

Plan the outlet location alongside the fireplace position, and verify the electrical requirements in the manufacturer’s manual. Don’t choose a model based on appearance alone or assume a power cord will reach your preferred outlet.

Heating needs vary by room. Without verified coverage information, wattage alone shouldn’t be treated as a promise that a fireplace will heat a particular space.

Think about everyday use

Consider how you want to control the fireplace. This model offers app, remote, and on-unit controls, an adjustable thermostat, and a 1–9 hour shut-off timer.

You can also enjoy its flame effect without heat. Three flame and top-light colors provide nine combinations, while included simulated logs and crystals let you arrange the fuel bed.

Before you order

  • Measure the available wall space, including width, height, and depth.
  • Compare overall dimensions separately from insert dimensions.
  • Confirm your preferred installation method.
  • Review the manufacturer’s opening, clearance, and electrical requirements.
  • Check the controls, heat settings, and included accessories.
